Pediatric Rheumatology Series, lecture:2 – Pediatric Gait, Arms, Legs, and Spine (PGALS) by Dr. Sushma Shree

Pediatric Gait, Arms, Legs, and Spine (PGALS) is a simple and systematic musculoskeletal screening tool used to identify joint abnormalities in children. This undergraduate session will provide an overview of the PGALS examination, including how to assess gait, movement of arms and legs, and spinal alignment through a series of structured questions and physical maneuvers. The focus will be on recognizing normal versus abnormal findings and understanding their clinical significance. PGALS is particularly useful in routine pediatric assessments to screen for conditions such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, musculoskeletal infections, or developmental disorders. Early detection through PGALS can facilitate timely diagnosis, appropriate referral, and improved management of pediatric musculoskeletal conditions.
