Infection Series-2, Lecture-3: Streptococcus in SSTI by Dr. Sahjid Mukhida

This session will provide an overview of Streptococcus species involved in skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), with emphasis on Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus). Topics will include pathogenesis, clinical presentations such as impetigo, cellulitis, erysipelas, and necrotizing fasciitis, diagnostic approaches, and treatment strategies. The clinical relevance and complications such as toxic shock syndrome and post-streptococcal sequelae will also be highlighted to enhance understanding of its medical importance. Early recognition of Streptococcus-induced SSTIs is critical to prevent progression to severe complications like necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis. Prompt initiation of targeted antibiotics and surgical intervention when necessary can significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce morbidity.
